Maison Krug came into being in 1843 when it was established in the commercial hub of Reims by Joseph Krug, formerly an accountant for Champagne Jacquesson. Fast forward to the present day and Krug is without doubt a powerhouse of modern Champagne. Much of the brilliance of its wines lies in their consistent synergy of richness with remarkable finesse of profile, due in part to initial fermentation of the entire range in small oak casks. It is no wonder, then, that Krug has become synonymous with staying power, occupying so often a significant tranche of the world’s greatest private collections. The anticipation surrounding its vintage releases has long been considerable in the fine wine world, in which a given year’s conditions are deemed capable of bearing the Krug name in their own right. The vintage wines are typically cellared for a decade before the market sees them. In 1998, low yields and scintillating acidity provided the framework for this sustained cellar maturation and the wine was composed of 50% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier sourced from 21 separate Crus.
