From what began as the farmstead inherited by Lalou Bize-Leroy in the late 1980s, the wines of Domaine d’Auvenay constitute some of the most passionately pursued by Burgundy fanatics worldwide (especially those with a penchant for white wines). Nestled above Saint-Romain, the domaine offers biodynamically-farmed expressions of 14 appellations, including Chevalier-, Bâtard- and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. Auxey-Duresses as a commune is inextricably linked with the Leroy dynasty, as it is the ongoing home of the family’s négociant arm (Maison Leroy); Les Clous covers a mere 0.29 ha. within it. Vintage 2007 saw mid-spring hail and abundant summer rainfall demand careful selection at harvest, but an overall wine style that is crystalline, chiseled and delicate. No matter the absence of a 1er or Grand Cru designation, there is surely a greater accessibility of wine style promised here.
